Home of the Hornets!

Welcome to the Home Page for
Martins Creek School
NC Reward School
The Martins Creek team will provide students with a safe, caring place to learn.

Did you know that NC law will require bus drivers to communicate with students using hand signals beginning next month? As a motorist, it will be important for you to understand that the hand signals are intended for the students and not for drivers in other vehicles. Click here to read an article about the signals and here to access a video and handouts demonstrating how the hand signals will be used to help keep students safe.

Martins Creek School received the Stacked Deck grant to teach out 8th graders about the problem behaviors that can be associated with or triggered by gambling. Not only is teaching this curriculum timely, given the new casino in town, but the grant will provide $5,000 to our school to acquire much needed technology. Students will use the technology to create public service announcements and posters demonstrating what they have learned. To find out more about the lessons, please contact Lisa Graves, our CTE Teacher (lisa.graves@Cherokee.k12.nc.us). Clicking the Stacked Deck icon will take you to the program's website.

Academic Update: The North Carolina School Report Card for Martins Creek School and Cherokee County Schools will be released soon. MCS was shown to be 6.1% higher than the state average in career and college readiness and 9.9% higher than the state average in grade-level proficiency in 2014-2013! Our School improved its performance in the 2014-2015 school year, meeting our expected growth. Official results from the 2014-2015 school year will be available in the school report card. When it is released, it will go home with all students.

Special Honors:

Martins Creek School earned Reward School Status and was recognized with an award by the NC State Board of Education for this accomplishment! Reward School status is based on three years of student achievement data. Out of 2,524 public and charter schools in the state, only 81 schools achieved Reward School Status. Only seven of these 81 schools housed middle grades, according to WKYK in Yancey County, and even fewer of them were K-8 schools like MCS. The larger the grade span, the more difficult it can be to consistently foster such high student achievement over the course of three years. If you have questions about Reward School Status, the criteria can be found online with any search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Please feel free to call the school with questions as well. Read part of a Cherokee Scout article on the school's accomplsihments here.
